Illegal Smile Ireland are a 5 piece band from Northern Ireland and are arguably the biggest aficionados of John Prine’s music in Europe and the UK. The band received standing ovations at all of their gigs, including the Belfast Guinness Blues Cafe, the Grand Social and Whelans Dublin.

They don’t seek to look or even sound like John Prine, but they skillfully reproduce his songs with integrity, sincerity, and the musical skill that listeners associate with John’s songs.

Barry Johnson leads the band on acoustic guitar and vocals. He is well known for his love of artists such as John Prine, Guy Clark and Steve Earle and he plays in the Travis Picking style so essential to giving this music its integrity. Superb guitarist, Sam Davidson has an American blues & country background. He brings subtle support and magnificent solos to the group. The singer, Ali Mooney, began her singing career in choirs and theater productions and not only brings wonderful harmonies but she leads many songs and duets. Coming from blues and sometimes heavy metal, bassist Davi Neill is very comfortable bringing soft basslines to the ensemble. He provides excellent harmonies and also sings in front. Drummer, Michael Conway comes from an orchestral background, specializing in timpani. Not only is he a superb drummer, he is one of Ireland’s finest percussionists and brings what can only be described as ‘magical’ to the show.
