IT’S A SUNNY DAY: Hunter Morris and Blue Blood are back with the new album give in to life which came out earlier this month. Notably, this is about the lightest, musically speaking, collection of songs that Morris has ever released. There are very few minor chord moments even when Morris deals with relatively heavy subject matter. On this album in particular, indie-Americana songwriter Morris taps into a deep well of influences, some clear and some less so. There’s an unmistakable Dinosaur, Jr. flavor to the verses of “Photographs,” and there’s plenty of 1980s radio pop flavor to “Up All Night.” Attentive listeners will also hear nuances from The Smiths and Housemartins on “She Drives Like A ’75.” A new music video will be released every week for all 10 songs. STAY CHIC, ATHENS: The UGA Center for the Performing Arts will host the Branford Marsalis Quartet Saturday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m. The show takes place at the Hodgson Concert Hall. The quartet – saxophonist Marsalis with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner – perform in support of the recent album The secret between shadow and soul. GIF: New metal-punk band from Athens Pervert just released their five-song album titled street poets. Led by singer Phelan La Velle (Shade, Crunchy, PPP&G), the trio explodes through this short track list. It takes a few minutes for the band to find their footing, but it finally comes on the third song, “The Lottery”, which strings together in a catchy slurry of loud guitars. To a lesser extent, the final track “Aquarius Abduction” is positioned in the same way. The other three songs (“The Face”, “House Of Horrors (Saliva Exhibition)”, “Luke’s Theme”) are fine in their sloppy execution and – reflecting the whole record – almost non-existent production values, but lack personality highlights mentioned above. BACK TO THE LABORATORY: Continuing its myriad of novelties, space brother returns this month with his hip-hop mix tape Galaxies. Before listeners can even think of the words “Future Ape Tapes,” MC Donny Knottsville names our host’s former collective. The 11 tracks here are notable for their mid-tempo speed but continuous forward motion. Each feels like a step forward, rather than a step forward, to the next. WHERE DID THE GOOD TIMES GO?: historic athens will host its fourth edition Mardi Gras Masquerade Starting Tuesday, March 1 at 6 p.m., this year’s event is presented by Terrapin Beer Co. as an indoor-outdoor event at the brewery’s location, 265 Newton Bridge Road. As with previous events, this year will feature a Best Dressed contest, the 2022 Mardi Gras court crowning, live music by Blair Crimmins and prostitutesa dance performance and lessons in modern pin-up, and more TBA. WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE VOTE WAS CHANGED?: Well, threatened in recent months, the old four-song demo of the grunge rockers from Athens Range is now reissued. This collection, a haon, was released in early 1993, and although there is no indication of which engineer recorded what, the band worked with various talents, including Andy Baker (The Bakery, Rock Central) and Peter Fancher (Elixir Recording) , and also ran his own Tascam four-track machine to record his glory. Musically speaking, it draws its aesthetic cues from late 1980s metal, hardcore, and hard rock, as well as a healthy dose of 70s hesher-psych. Look, that’s only four songs. HEADS UP: Twenty years ago experimenter and composer Michael Potier (The Electric Nature) recorded the 22 minutes Analog mount while living in a “dilapidated hole of a basement in Carrollton’s town center plaza”. Described by Potter as a “love letter” to the Philadelphia band Bardo Pond and the 1973 Alejandro Jodorowsky film The Holy Mountain, I can see where it’s coming from. I don’t know how “meditative” I would call that. It certainly could play such a role, but to me it’s energizing in a way that a lot of Potter’s work isn’t. That is to say, it is music for action, not for contemplation. As a bonus, there’s also a live version of the track recorded at Atlanta The Earl’s venue in 2012, and for my money that’s the jamming version. Log on to
