STEVE N’ SEAGULLS unveils Bluegrass SCORPIONS cover, discusses farming and cover songs in interview

Finnish metal-bluegrass cover band Steve N’ Seagulls is back! The band is now streaming their cover of Scorpions’ 1984 classic “Still Loving You” and were kind enough to sit down with Metal Injection for a brief interview about everything from covers to the people who really grow in the band.

How did the idea for Steve ‘n’ Seagulls come about? It seems like such an obvious thing to do, but you’re clearly one of the first.

It all started as a side project and something fun to do. As kids of the 90s, it was comfortable and great to play classics from that era. And it seemed like those songs worked well with that kind of instrumentation. There are plenty of great riffs to play with an accordion, banjo etc. It’s also nice to challenge yourself with this kind of mix which is not the most obvious for us Finns.

What is the arrangement process for Steve ‘n’ Seagulls? Does it usually start with an instrument and then go on, or do you all sit down and try to figure out how to make a song work?

For us, it’s usually for someone to come up with an arrangement idea or an original song. There may be a demo already well arranged or just a small idea. Then we start going through the ideas together and adding more ideas. That’s how it usually evolves into a gig-ready or album-ready song.

Is it hard to find songs to cover? You’ve been doing this for almost a decade now, and I imagine it’s getting hard to come up with new songs.

That’s right, it’s already been a decade! We think there are so many great songs in the world that there will always be one to find. But also on the last three albums, we also had original songs. But just to think that the 90s alone has such an incredible catalog of music that I don’t think we’re going to run out of cool songs.

How’s the reaction to a Steve ‘n’ Seagulls live broadcast? I imagine people having a good time.

We are in Belfast at the moment and last night was our first gig in Dublin. It was such a great time and people gave us amazing feedback. We can honestly say we have some awesome fans. People love to have a good time at our shows, we’ll talk to people before and after the show – usually at the merch desk. And we also get a lot of feedback on our social media channels. We can therefore say with joy that the feedback is super positive! And thank you all for that! It’s great every time. There was a wall of death, moshpits, auditorium audiences and everything in between.

I need to know – how many members of Steve ‘n’ Seagulls are actually farmers?

One of us has a business in the countryside – he is involved in various types of agriculture. Two of us live in the countryside – not sure if that counts as a farmer, but that includes a lot of farm type work. One of us teams up among the cows and spends a lot of time in his countryside – growing lots of plants and such. We all come from small towns and at least half of us live in the countryside right now. So it’s not the easiest answer, but hopefully that clarifies the question a bit. Most of our videos are shot on our farms or where we grew up. So there is a lot of farmer blood in our group!
