Actors are used to putting on their headphones and listening to music while stepping in and out of character for their roles. In the case of Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays the villainous Vecna in stranger things In season 4, his favorite music included a track that regained popularity thanks to the show: “Running Up That Hill”.

However, it was not the original version of the Kate Bush song (which is sweeping the Billboard graphics even as we write). Instead, Bower revealed on the Kyle Meredith with… podcast that it was the cover of Placebo’s “Running Up That Hill” in 2006 that helped get rid of Vecna skin.

“When I was preparing for Vecna, to get into Vecna, I used a lot of bands like Sun 0))), Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, Mayhem,” the actor said. “A lot of black metal stuff that I really hung onto and I was like, ‘Wow, that’s awesome. There’s also something about the sensibility in the way black metal is made and their belief system that I really vibrate with.

He continued,

“It was Vecna coming into Vecna. Escape from Vecna… I’m a huge Placebo fan. I love Placebo. And obviously Placebo covered Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” at some point, I don’t know, I guess it must have been in the late 90s, early 2000s. And so I would go with that. Why not stick to the theme that is already in the show? But the song is so beautiful, we love Kate Bush, we stan Kate Bush… Or if I’m really bad, if somebody wanted me to be bad, and they said, ‘What would you choose?’ , I’d say, ‘I don’t know, fucking Miley Cyrus’ ‘Party in the USA’ or something.’

Using metal to get into the twisted, evil Vecna makes sense, but using “Running Up That Hill” to get out it’s pretty meta, like those who watched stranger things Directing Season 4. (No spoilers here!)
